It’s International Women’s Day today which at oneHR we love to celebrate. We like to use the day to celebrate our achievements, as well as raise awareness about women’s equality. As a female-led business this is a super important day to all within our company. We are proud to operate successfully in the tech sector, which is typically male-dominated. We use International Women’s Day to celebrate our successes.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to:
- celebrate women’s achievements
- raise awareness about women’s equality
- lobby for accelerated gender parity
- fundraise for female-focused charities
So we asked the women within our team, ‘What does International Women’s Day mean to you?’
‘For me, International Women’s Day is an occasion to celebrate all the successes of women around the world. It is a reminder for both men and women that we still need to work towards equality in and out of the workplace.
For my Daughters, it provides new role models and inspires them to believe that they really can achieve anything.’
‘Of course it is about celebration and recognising achievement but it is also a day which will hopefully inspire and propel our young women to realise they too can reach their potential and be whoever they want to be. I particularly like to think we celebrate the achievements of the unsung heroes those who have struggled and continue to struggle in the face of adversity when they could so easily have given up, we must praise and recognise them and look to offer support and guidance where we can. We all need that arm around us from time to time’.
‘International women’s day is a day that celebrates many changes that happened to create equality for women. It’s also a great day to honour many inspirational, supportive and motivational women that continue to inspire us daily.’
‘International women’s day is an opportunity to celebrate women and girls all over the world and of course to honour those who have been at the forefront of the fight against things like gender discrimination and inequalities in civil, legal and human rights.’
‘International Women’s Day, to me means a day to celebrate all women. As a working mum, it is so important to celebrate all the little victories, especially in the current climate so it is always lovely to hear inspiring stories from others.’
‘To me, IWD means celebrating women’s equality and their achievements globally. As a working mum I understand how difficult it is to juggle wanting a career yet also wanting, and needing, to care for your children. IWD embraces and empowers those women around the world, who do and do not have kids, but have aspired to achieve what they want in business and life!’
‘To celebrate the achievements and successes of women, and encourage others – especially the younger generation – to pursue their goals and dreams, whatever they may be.’
‘I am surrounded by so many strong, accomplished women that do whatever they do so fiercely and graciously, that actually, International Women’s Day for me is a reminder that women have not been or are still not given the credit they deserve for what they bring to the table. This is something I almost forget about given that I witness every day what a strong force women are. I think IWD is a reminder for us all to applaud the women around us, who may have had to work doubly hard to get where they are today and may still not be recognised as they should.’
‘I know women who are going to the gym, feeding the family, getting the kids ready and dropped at school, getting dressed themselves, doing their hair and make-up, and getting to work – all before 9am. So if a woman asks for some flexibility around her working hours, shouldn’t we be asking her how she does it, rather than questioning her commitment? In support of this year’s International Women’s Day 2021 theme, ‘I choose to challenge’, I am going to pledge to do more as a HR professional to positively influence attitudes towards women in work.’
